Early risers.

Dependable... no matter what the weather brings (rain, snow or hail).

Committed...to keeping children safe in their community.

Who does this describe, you might ask? Why, crossing guards of course! Crossing Guard Contest 2011

Hundreds of men and women across Canada work hard each and every day to keep our children safe while walking to and from school so that we can be rest assured that our children are crossing the busy streets safely.  Crossing guards are always at their intersection, ready for duty and prepared to help children navigate an intersection and protect them from speeders or aggressive drivers.  It’s a tough job and we think they deserve some credit.

That is why Safe Kids Canada and FedEx Express Canada want to recognize the contributions of three special crossing guards across Canada.  The winning crossing guards will each receive an engraved plaque and the winning schools will each receive $1,000.

One of the schools from last year’s contest had the following to say about their winning crossing guard:

“Eighty-two year old Doris (also known as Grandma) maintains order and safety at her corner. There are many buses and speeding cars making the crossing very dangerous. We depend on her for our students’ safety. Last year, we had a particularly bad ice storm which coated all the roads in a thick layer of ice. Doris slowly hobbled to the school, carefully on the slippery sidewalks, and then to her station, risking her own safety to make sure others are safe.”

- École St. Avila (Winnipeg, Manitoba)

If you know a great crossing guard who deserves to be recognized, nominate them today before the contest closes on November 25, 2011.

Tell us about how they keep children safe and why they are a good role model. Don’t forget to include photos or pictures!
