In talking with members of the public and the media over the past few weeks, everyone seems shocked at the inordinate number of drownings we have already experienced this summer. I always feel like this shouldn’t be news to anyone. We always have more drownings in the summer than any other time of year, because more people are in, or around, the water in warmer weather.
Are you really surprised by this? Honestly Canada, I don’t think the country could actually go one hot July weekend without having at least one person drowning!
Why? Well because that would mean everyone in Canada would have to do three simple things:
1) Stay within sight and reach of children whenever they are in, on or around the water
2) Wear a lifejacket when boating
3) Stay sober in, on or by the water
Yup, these three things have actually proven to be impossible for Canadians to do.
Because…
1) Canadians want to read and relax while sitting by the water – that's considered watching the kids isn't it? Besides if the kids go under water and need help someone will hear them right?
Actually, people don’t splash around calling for help like in the movies. When you can’t breathe, you cannot make a sound.
2) Most Canadians know how to swim, only 41 percent of boaters who drown didn’t know how to swim, and the majority of Canadians don’t fall into that group!
You’re right, most Canadians boaters who drown are in the 59 percent who know how to swim and drown anyway while boating because they weren’t wearing a lifejacket.
3) Canadians go to (insert your favourite water location here) to relax and unwind; no way can Canadians do that without some spirits!
Yeah Canadians can’t relax on the water at all without alcohol. There is no way Canadians could handle our beautiful waterways without it. It would be too overwhelming to our fragile psyches.
So go on Canada prove me wrong! I dare you! I challenge you to make this weekend drowning-free! I bet you can’t do it!
