A booster seat for every ride
One February afternoon, I was driving my 8 year old daughter home after dropping off a friend. We were driving in our neighbourhood and close to arriving home, when out of nowhere, a car coming in the opposite direction veered into our lane and hit the passenger side of our car.
My daughter was sitting in a booster seat in the back seat behind me, as she is not tall enough yet to wear only a seat belt. She had bruises on her hips and eye as a result of the car crash but her injuries were not life-threatening. She was taken to the hospital, where she stayed for a few days so that the staff could observe her and make sure there were no further medical issues. The doctor said that her injuries were typical of a child who was in a booster seat and had she only been wearing a seat belt, her injuries could have been much more serious.
Thank goodness she was well protected in the booster seat. Our experience reinforces that no matter how many times you drive your regular route home, and no matter how short the drive is, it’s important to use a car seat or booster seat every time.
