Lesson learned: wear a helmet
Like most 13-year-old boys, I spent my summers on my bike. And like most 13-year-old boys, safety wasn't at the top of my mind at the time. I spent my summers doing tricks on my bike, while I hung out with my friends who were doing the same. Then one average day, I fell off my bike and hit my head on the pavement. I wasn't wearing a helmet.
At first, it didn't seem like anything had happened. I went home, but it wasn't until a few hours later that it became clear that something was seriously wrong. I became confused and incoherent. Answering simple questions, like what was my name and what was the date, were impossible.
My parents, scared about the way I was behaving and still unaware that I had fallen off my bike, rushed me to the hospital. I spent a week at SickKids for a concussion that thankfully didn't result in any long-term damage to my health and well-being. But even though I came out of the experience unscathed, what's the point of putting myself and my family through an experience like that? It was a traumatic and difficult week. Wearing a helmet would have prevented it.
