Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre (Ottawa, Ontario)
The objective of slowing traffic and increasing pedestrian safety was identified by Bayshore residents through the Community Development Framework (CDF) process. Door to door outreach was conducted and the Pace
Car pledge was translated into both French and Arabic. The program was subsequently launched at a “Bayshore Works” event. Volunteer residents were on-site with their cars sporting the Pace Car window cling and a member of the committee spoke about the program launch and how to get involved. Over 400 residents attended, which exceeded initial expectations. Working in partnership with the Bayshore Community Association, the committee provided refreshments and community partners were invited to offer their services and information. After the launch, an event was organized to celebrate the achievements of the CDF and the success of the Pace Car program was highlighted. A representative from Fed Ex Express Canada and the Ottawa Police Service participated in the celebration. The Pace Car committee purchased gift certificates for the Bayshore Shopping Centre to draw attention to the program and encourage broader outreach and engagement. The Bayshore community has collected 173 signed Pace Car pledges through the Pace Car Program.

Parents were encouraged to sign-up for the Pace Car program during drop-off when the Pace Car program was officially launched at École Arthur Meighen. The event saw a great turn-out of grandparents, parents and children. Parents were encouraged to have their child sign as their witness on the Pace Car pledge form, and to keep their parents accountable if they noticed them speeding. After the official indoor launch, volunteers signed up parents as they dropped off their children at both Arthur Meighen and Crescentview schools. A FedEx Express Canada representative attended with a FedEx Express vehicle draped in the Pace Car banner. During the one hour launch, 100 people signed up for the program! The local media was very supportive of the project and ran several stories. Mix 96’s Morning Show hosts JD and Friends, broadcasted live from the program launch, accompanied by City Councillor Irvine Ferris and RCMP Constable James Huberts. Councillor Ferris also appeared on The Morning Show at a later date and spoke positively of the program. The Pace Car program was a huge success with 300 people who signed up for it.
