Carbon monoxide detectors can save your child's life

Carbon monoxide detector

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless toxic gas, produced by sources such as defective appliances, clothes dryers, furnaces, or exhaust fumes from cars in garages. This gas can cause a coma or death.

Here are some safety tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from happening:

Install carbon monoxide detectors.
Make sure to check the labels of all your carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they meet standards such as CSA, CGA, ULC or UL. It is important to have carbon monoxide detectors on all levels of a home, particularly near sleeping areas and the home's heating source. Carbon monoxide detectors have been shown to be effective in preventing deaths due to carbon monoxide poisonings.

Check your home appliances.
Annual maintenance on all fuel-burning appliance and furnaces is important to minimize the risk of carbon monoxide poisonings. Be sure that wood-burning stoves and fireplace vents are clear.
