Walk This Way in Canada

Walk This Way in Canada

Safe Kids Canada, together with our sponsor FedEx Express® Canada, is pleased to offer the Walk This Way in Canada pedestrian safety program, aimed at reducing child pedestrian injuries and deaths while encouraging healthy and active living.

In Canada, pedestrian injuries are one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths for children 14 years of age and younger. By working together we can and have made a difference! According to Transport Canada, the number of child pedestrian injuries and deaths has slowly declined over the last decade! Safe Kids Canada wants to see the rates continue to go down because each fatality is a tragedy - most often a preventable one.

Pedestrian safety can be tackled from a variety of angles, and creative approaches. Our pedestrian program offers resources and tools for parents, caregivers, teachers and community groups who share our goal of enhancing child-pedestrian safety. We are pleased to share these materials and always welcome feedback.

Canada's Favourite Crossing Guard

Safe Kids Canada and FedEx are pleased to announce the winners of the "Canada's Favourite Crossing Guard Contest".

Congratulations to:

  1. James (Jim) Arnold of Oakville, Ontario,
  2. Elizabeth Day of Burnaby, British Columbia and
  3. Ross Smithson of Winnipeg, Manitoba,

for their exemplary service dedicated to ensuring the safety of child pedestrians. Embracing the position of crossing guard to the fullest extent, their energy and enthusiasm reflects an awareness of the immense impact their role has on the daily lives of school children.

All the entries reflected a high calibre of hard-working and dedicated individuals and we thank all those who submitted an entry for taking the time to share their appreciation for their community crossing guards.

Pedestrian SafetyStudents aim their cameras at pedestrian safety

In 2008, with support from Safe Kids Worldwide and FedEx Express, children around the world participated in Photovoice projects which involve taking photos to highlight local child pedestrian safety issues. They were eagerly joined by Canadian students at Havenwood P.S in Mississauga Ontario.

In 2009 grade 5 and 6 students at J.W. Walker P.S. in Fort Frances, Ontario had an opportunity to participate in Photovoice as well.
