Crossing guard helping kids cross the streetFall is in the air.  I can smell the bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils and the banter of joyful children as they say good morning to Jack my friendly neighbourhood crossing guard. Jack lives in the same apartment building as me and I often bump into him in the laundry room, but my first encounter with Jack was as a driver on my way to my first job here in Toronto, a.k.a. The Big Smoke.

All decked out in his mandatory florescent crossing guard attire, he looked, well, visible, but he was also genuinely happy to see and talk to the kids on their way to school. As I stopped to let the kids cross the street, I could hear him say good morning to each child as they walked passed, remembering their names and asking them if they were excited about their new teacher or class. He even took the time to talk to the little ones walking to school for the first time with their parents, explaining to them how they should only cross the street to school with his help. You could see how safe the kids felt, knowing that Jack’s only job was to get them to and from school safely; he wasn’t there to do anything else.

Whether it’s the big city or a small town, crossing guards like Jack play an important role in pedestrian safety in their community. And Jack certainly never lets me forget it, whenever I see him in the laundry room!

This is why FedEx and Safe Kids Canada want to help recognize the contributions of three crossing guards in Canada.

We want students, teachers and parents from across the country to nominate their favourite crossing guard during “Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard Contest,” which runs until November 26, 2010.

Help us promote the importance of pedestrian safety by encouraging kids and their schools to tell us about their favourite crossing guard:

How do they keep the children safe?

Why are they a good role model?

Remember to include photos or pictures!

The winning crossing guards will receive an engraved plaque. The contest winner’s school will receive a new computer valued at $1,000.

You can read more about our contest and download a nomination form from our website.

So go ahead, tell us why your very own neighbourhood “Jack” should be Canada’s favourite crossing guard!

FedEx is a proud supporter of Safe Kids Walk This Way, a global program that advocates for child pedestrian safety. For more information about this program, click here.
